How can I set exclusive answer options on Every?

What are exclusive answer options and how should I use it?

Exclusive answer options are useful in certain multiple choice questions where respondents can select more than one answer that applies to them. Even though respondents are allowed to select more than one answer, you’ll find that some answer options should only be selected by themselves. A good example of an exclusive answer option is “None of the above”.

Let’s look at an example of a multiple choice question that requires an exclusive answer option.

If you were going to buy a TV in the next year, which of the following TV brands would you consider?

  • Brand A
  • Brand B
  • Brand C
  • Other brands
  • I will not be purchasing a TV in the next year

If a respondent selected “I will not be purchasing a TV in the next year”, should they also be allowed to select Brand A, Brand B, Brand C or Other brands? No, it would not make sense logically.

Therefore, “I will not be purchasing a TV in the next year” should be an exclusive answer option; if they select this answer option, they should not be allowed to select any other answer options.

How does this feature work on our platform?

Keeping to the example shown above, if your respondents selected “I will not be purchasing a TV in the next year”, it will automatically clear any other answer options they have selected.

How to set exclusive answer options?

When you toggle the “Multiple selection” option in question types where multiple selection is supported, you will see an option under settings called “Make selection exclusive”.

When you toggle this, it will enable the feature to set exclusive answer options.

In the dropdown that appears, select the answer option that should be an exclusive answer option. You can only select one answer option to be made an exclusive answer option.
