Ranking Question Score

Where do the 'scores' in my charts come from when I use a ranking question?

Let's use the following example to see how you get those 'scores' on the ranking question you used in your survey.

Your question is as follows:

Rank the following from your favourite snack (1) to your least favourite snack (4).

Fries
Nuggets
Potato chips
Chocolate

If a respondent has ranked the given options in the above order (fries ranked first and chocolate ranked last), then each snack will be given a score based on this ranking. The top ranked will be given a high score, and the lower ranked will be given a lower score. So fries will be scored 4, nuggets 3, potato chips 2 and chocolate 1.

Below are the rankings and scores from 3 respondents:

So the average score you see on Every will be an average of these 'scores' given by individual respondents, shown below:

From these responses, the final chart should show fries and potato chips being tied for top snack with a score of 2.67, and nuggets and chocolate being tied for second place with a score of 2.33.

Limitation

One thing to take note of is if the answer options for the ranking question is carried forward from another MA question, the ranking score will need to be recalculated. Reason being the respondent will skip the ranking question if they only select 1 answer option in the previous MA question, the selected single answer option was not calculated as part of the ranking score.

Let's use an example to demonstrate the situation.

Your question is as follows:

Q1: [Multiple Answer] Which of the following snacks do you prefer?

Fries
Nuggets
Potato chips
Chocolate

Q2: [Ranking] Rank your preferred snacks from the most preferred (top) to the least preferred (bottom).

{Carry forward the selected answer options from Q1}

As respondent 3 & 4 have only selected 1 answer in the MA question, they skipped answering the ranking question, therefore their responses are not part of the ranking score.
