Who should I ask?

Who should be answering your survey to give you insightful data?

So we decided we're going to ask people questions.

Do we know who we're going to ask these questions to? Would what these people answer be reflective of who would be your customers? How many people should we ask?

First, an introduction to the concept of population and sample in statistics:

A sample is a group of individuals in which one is collecting data about i.e those who did the survey.

A population is the group that the sample is supposed to draw conclusions about i.e those who did the survey represent the views of those living in Malaysia.

Every defaults to asking people who are representative of Malaysia so that when the results of the survey comes back, you can be certain that it is modelled on the diversity of opinions in Malaysia.

However if your products are used by only a certain segment of the population e.g: hair gel for men, you'd want to just ask men these questions, or even better, men who are interested in Hair Gel.

Choosing the correct audience is crucial to making sure that the data you get is insightful.
